Portfolio

The SHANA Education Board wishes to emphasize that advanced training in head and neck anesthesia is intended for the trainees beyond their initial level of training. In the U.S., such training should probably be reserved for second and third year anesthesia residents only.

The Education Board encourages the head and neck anesthesia programs to develop a case log/portfolio to assist the trainee with monitoring individual progress in acquiring skills in head and neck anesthesia and advanced airway management. Maintenance of the personal professional development portfolio by the trainee is considered highly desirable for demonstrating competency in practice-based learning and improvement. Referencing such portfolio will also facilitate appropriate anesthesia assignment by the head and neck anesthesia service director, thus allowing each trainee to maximize personal didactic and practical experience.

The examples of such portfolios, based on the experience of Stanford head and neck anesthesia and advanced airway management program, are listed below. Individual head and neck anesthesia services are encouraged to develop the portfolios that suit their patient selection, clinical practice, and teaching environment.
